TRICK: Surrender to Your Fears.
Today’s pool trick/tip comes from Gail Glazebrook, Amsterdam League member, CFO of National Amateur Pool League, and one of the most popular ambassadors of pool. In her blog Confessions of G Squared, Billiards Digest best blog of 2012, she addresses this grave challenge, including the following quote from Martin Luther King Jr.:
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
She further expounds on why some pool players never get better:…
“Fear. They don’t stand up to their fears. Whether it’s fear of failure, fear of success, fear of their opponent, or fear of public scrutiny, fear holds us all back at some point…There will ALWAYS be someone bigger, stronger, but you decide who wants it more. You gotta be in it to win it and you know what? You might be surprised how strong you are when you test yourself.”

TREAT: Goulish Gail

TRICK: Pool Basics
Staring down an 8 or 9 ball can be scary for pros and amateur players alike. Amsterdam league manager Chris Lynch shares some simple tricks that should be the foundation of every shot, but are often overlooked especially under pressure.
- Avoid popping up: don’t move your head until you see where the object ball goes.
- Prepare your pocket: picture the result you want before you get into your stance.
- Shoot softly: This makes the pocket seem much bigger while shooting harder makes it much smaller. Don’t shoot hard without a really good reason!
- Chalk before each shot: Chalk prior to shooting, don’t wait until after you miscue.
