Whether you’re a twelve-year veteran of our 9-ball leagues or you’ve never held a cue, you’ll be surprised to know just how many celebs, politicians, and historical figures love our favorite game. Â Here’s three unexpected figures from all different fields who love to shoot pool. Oh, and regardless of your experience level, join our next c0-ed pool league starting 5/14 to shoot pool, learn the game, and meet people!
1. Â Barack Obama
Yep, the Ruler of the Free World likes to spend what little free time he has shooting pool. Â President Obama was photographed at Schultzie’s Billiards in West Virginia during the 2008 primaries, and even buried a few tough shots into the corner pocket. Â Obama must also be a fan of British philosopher Herbert Spencer, because he paraphrased Spencer in describing his billiards chops, joking that his talent was “the sign of a misspent youth” (we don’t agree!).
2. Â Mark Twain
Samuel Longhorne Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, was a rabid billiards player who 1906 Billiard Champion William Hoppe described as “the most enthusiastic billiard fan” he ever knew. Â Twain stipulated anywhere he lived, there must be a proper billiards table. Â As he grew older, billiards became an obsession for him; he was a recluse who would only accept callers if they were willing to shoot pool with him. Â Once, when his house caught fire, he was so invested in his game of billiards that he barely even noticed the flames! Â Now that’s dedication.
3. Â Justin Tuck (DE, New York Giants)
Super Bowl Champion Justin Tuck of the New York Giants has as much skill with a pool cue as he does in the trenches. Â Tuck hosts an annual Celebrity Billiards tournament to benefit his R.U.S.H. for Literacy campaign. Â He’s pretty adept at the game himself: here’s a nifty little shot from the crafty defensive lineman.

Welcome to the first edition of “Ask an Amsterdam Bartender!” Each week, we’ll be asking the bartenders at Amsterdam Billiards the questions that you want answered. Â This week’s interview is with the lovely Steph. Â If you’d like your question’s featured on this section, send an email to email@example.com with the subject line “Ask a Bartender”!
Steph: I’d say my favorite drink is usually Captain Morgan and Diet Coke: I like to keep it simple. If I’m feeling like it’s a whiskey night, there’s a drink that one of the bartenders here made called the “Danny Boy†– it’s Jameson, ginger, and soda with oranges and cherries. It’s delicious.
Q: Do you have any good advice on treating a bad hangover?
Steph: Honestly, I think the best advice is just to drink more. Basically, a hangover is just withdrawal from alcohol, so as long as you don’t go overboard, you might be better off drinking more.
Q: What’s the best pick-up line you’ve ever gotten while working here?
Steph: It’s funny you ask that: I actually got a pretty good one today. Three guys walked up to the bar, and one of them pointed to his friend and said “My buddy’s new in town, can you give him directions?†I asked, “Directions to where?†and he responded “To your heart.†It was corny, but kind of funny.
Q: Lastly, one of our coworkers said you started a line of women’s apparel- is that true?
Steph: Yeah, I actually have a line of bras and corsets, they’re all handmade and embellished with Swarovski and Czech crystals and chains. They’re very “Vegasâ€: really good for club-goers, bartenders and entertainers. They’re all custom made-to-order, and you can find them on my website,  www.slbellinger.com.
